Our Why

Limes hanging from a branch of a lime tree, surrounded by yellow-green leaves.

At Western Toad Compost, we believe the life beneath our feet holds the key to building thriving ecosystems — from soil to plant to plate. When microbial communities flourish, soil health improves, plants grow stronger and more nutrient-dense, and ultimately, people thrive too.

Our mission is to restore and regenerate the land, one compost pile at a time.

Born from a deep respect for nature and the intelligence of living systems, we’re here to offer real tools for real soil transformation - through microbial life, closed-loop practices, and regenerative thinking.

Our Approach

We practice what we preach.

  • Biodynamic & KNF-Inspired: We lean on nature’s intelligence — cultivating balance, diversity, and resilience using Korean Natural Farming principles and biodynamic techniques.

  • Biologically Active: All of our composts are alive, teeming with beneficial microbes, fungi, and nutrients that feed your soil — not just your plants.

  • Hyper-Local: Sourced and produced on the Central Coast of California, with local inputs and hand-crafted processes.

Whether you're cultivating backyard veggies or regenerating acreage, our work supports yours — from the ground up.

Why the Toad?

A warty, brown toad sitting on a log.

Western toads are resilient, adaptive, and excellent indicators of a healthy ecosystem. Like our compost, they thrive in biodiverse, well-balanced environments. We see them as a symbol of soil health and a reminder that even the smallest creatures can make a big impact. Plus, many call our compost pile home!

Meet the Founder

Hi, I’m Dusty — composter, soil steward, and the human behind Western Toad Compost.

I started Western Toad to create compost and inputs I could trust in my own backyard— biologically rich, free from junk, and made with intention. I believe in working with nature and helping others feel empowered to regenerate right where they are.
